“Io sono chi siamo” - I am who we are

Io sono chi siamo, an Italian saying that translates as “I am who we are”.
I am who we are.
I am a nation devastated by appalling tragedy.
I am a community who turns towards those in need, not away from them.
I am thousands of volunteer fire-fighters risking my life to fight fires that don’t threaten my home.
I am the hundreds of army reservists who will work to retrieve the dead.
I am the man who lost my home and my friends and I return to fight fires that threaten someone else.
I am the pensioner who makes 500 sandwiches a day to feed the emergency workers.
I am the parent who lost my child to the fires and I can still give comfort to others.
I am the flood victim who gave my Centrelink emergency money to the bushfire appeal.
I am the thousands of Australian children who gave pocket money and favourite toys to the children who lost everything.
I am all the people who volunteer to do the awkward and unglamorous work that no one will ever hear about.
I am every person who cried for the grief of strangers.
I am the queues of people outside the blood bank, waiting patiently to give blood and money because it is the least I can do.
I am the hundreds of volunteers caring for injured animals.
I am the government officials who work all night to find support for the devastated people who need to return home.
I am the hundreds of thousands of Australians who, together, gave millions of dollars to the bushfire appeal.
I am the corporation that gave away profits in the middle of a financial crisis.
I am a government who puts aside politics to do what needs to be done and makes sure it gets done quickly and done right.
I am so proud to be Australian right now. Look at who we are!
