Pissing Policy into the Wind Again
Is anyone actually surprised by this? Come on, really? Are you trying to tell me that you really really really thought the federal government would actually come up with a policy and act on it? It's the federal ALP, folks, what the hell else did you think was going to happen over the Murray-Darling basin?
There are conflicting interests, for fuck's sake! There are dying trees, and disappearing wetlands, and there are angry farmers on TV, and the big bad Opposition will shout "UR DOIN IT WRONG!!!"
This guarantees that the policy, whether there was broad consultation prior to its announcement or not, will be diluted beyond all recognition. As soon as someone, anyone, complains about the government or its policies, it goes scurrying off like cockroaches under light, frantically trying to appease all concerned and eventually coming up with a policy that is so craven and bastardised that it offends absolutely anyone who goes anywhere near it.
The environmental flows will be so low that the entire environmentalist arm, including the Greens, will vote against it as More Of The Same Bullshit; enough individual farmers and/or communities will have water allocations taken from them, in an off-hand manner, to ensure the Farmers' Federation, the Nationals, the Independents and anyone who's ever travelled more than 5 km from the CBD will vote against it as More Farmer Bashing.
It wont get passed, giving the government more evidence of the Opposition being "wreckers", and the Opposition more evidence of a government in crisis, unable to pass legislation.
Meanwhile the Murray-Darling Basin continues to be over-irrigated, and the towns along its length continue to struggle, but that doesn't matter because we've got lots of exciting arguing and shouting on the nightly news, lots of he said/she said non-reporting, and all we’ll get out of it is a continuation of our proud tradition of Doing Absolutely Nothing While Saying A LOT.
