I have a general theory that the world can be divided into two types of folks (a gross generalization but let it slide): those that like everything to be essentially the same, or in other words no surprises, and those that totally crave and love surprises - the unique, the one of, even the weird.

I am happy to admit I fall into the latter category to an almost extreme degree, particularly when it comes to shopping for wine. I will grant you that the wine chain stores (e.g., Dan Murphys, Vintage Cellars, etc) have their place in the vino shopping hierarchy, but for me they almost never offer or provide that essential element of surprise or the ‘thrill of the hunt’ moment that my favourite destinations often do. The strength of the chain stores is that they offer an extensive selection of reasonably large production wines at pretty good, if not the best, prices in town (though I have occasionally found this to be untrue).

If you are going to throw a barbeque for fifty of your best mates (and partners) head for Dan Murphys or better yet just drop by your local cleanskins outlet and load up, because most folks probably won’t be that interested or picky about the wine they’ll be slurping and your biggest concern will likely be the cost.

If, on the other hand, you have, or are developing, the vino bug and you scour the wine magazines, newspaper columns or frequent the numerous wine web sites for pointers to the winemakers doing a slightly different wine, then the wine stores I have listed below might be of interest to you. This is NOT about wine snobbery in any way, shape or form – almost anyone can track down and buy the latest release of Penfold’s Grange. The stores below are as much, if not more, about finding, supporting and providing exceptionally well-made, small production, true artisan wines at a most reasonable price.

So with the Holiday Season fast upon us, this also may help with the shopping for that special gift for the wino in the house.
