What is it, how do I get it and how do I keep it?
The modern obsession with maintaining our youth and vitality is evidence of the changing trends in health care. In over thirty years of dentistry I have witnessed the emphasis in health services shift from pain and disease management to prevention and elective health services.
I can Google like the best of us! The World Health Organization (WHO), in 1948 defined health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. In 1986 the WHO in the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, said that health is “a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities.”
Recent research shows that self-control and self-discipline are essential in achieving long-term health. Children showing early signs of self-mastery were not only less likely to develop addictions or exhibit criminal tendencies by adulthood but were also healthier and wealthier than their more impulsive peers. The keys to longevity clearly are regular exercise, adequate sleep, a balanced diet, less alcohol and no smoking - the products of self-discipline and self control.
Now that I have passed the 50 year milestone, I understand what’s been going wrong – compromised self-discipline and it’s time to exercise the self-control-muscle. Less booze, animal fat and TV, more exercise and sleep. Who knows, more sex too could help me down the corrective path.
Clearly, its what we do as parents that is critical – many of the values we instil in our children have life long implications for their health. Maybe those Tiger Mothers may have something after all. Reviewing the health of children of Tiger Parents, that would be an interesting study. Early diagnoses of conditions are essential. Having yourself and your loved ones regularly examined by qualified professionals is fundamental.
Questions to the Dentist
Q. How often should I get my teeth cleaned by a dental professional?
A. The purpose of a “check up and clean” is to examine the teeth, mouth and jaws. Many dental conditions like periodontal disease, dental decay and tooth cracking have little or no symptoms until they’ve reach an advanced stage. Regular dental checkups can prevent the development of expensive, painful conditions.
Having your teeth’s bio-film (plaque) removed (along with oral hygiene instruction) improves the periodontal heath of your teeth. This should be done every 6 to 12 month in healthy mouths.
