The ABC, in its wisdom, has just decided to axe Radio National’s Religion Report, among others.
The Religion Report is a weekly half hour radio program that presents interviews, reports and investigations into various activities and schools of thought from all faiths across the world.
The ABC has decided that this is no longer relevant or useful, in much the same way that they decided several years back to axe the Environment Report because it was no longer relevant or useful. The Religion Report is one of the most well researched, well balanced and well presented programs on Radio National and I cannot think of a time where it is more important that we understand different religions and how their teachings are affecting the world we live in.
As a research tool, a means of expanding understanding of all faiths and spiritual beliefs and a fascinating way to pass the drive to work, the Religion Report is unique, and ‘our ABC’ should know this without being told.
However, given that this is clearly not the case, please take 2 minutes out of your day to email the ABC and let them know that not all of us are in favour of dumbing down the National Broadcaster or silencing a program that frequently upsets the conservatives of all faiths by suggesting that someone else may have a point of view worth listening to.
Apparently they are also planning on axing a number of other radio segments (the Media Report, the Conversation Hour and several others) that have a habit of tweaking the tail of the conservative and powerful.
‘Your ABC’ is not supposed to back off when they upset the powers that be (anyone remember what happened with the Glasshouse?). ‘Your ABC’ is not supposed to provide more mindless, mainstream pap for the masses. ‘Your ABC’ is supposed to be the last bastion of investigative journalism and intelligent debate.
Are we really happy to let them slide the slope down to reality TV and current affairs shows about deadbeat dads and drugged out single moms?
NO!
You can email them here and tell them so
Anyone who is interested in what the Religion Report does can find out more here.
