When did we get some politicians with some balls (Bronwyn Bishop excluded) and why wasn’t I informed?! First we had Barnaby Joyce threatening to cross the floor on certain issues but never really coming to the party, then Stephen Fielding (UGH!!!! VOMIT!!!) threatening to cross the floor, but only to blackmail both sides of parliament into bowing to his agenda. Now we have a real hero who has done it once and vows to do it again, just because it’s the right thing to do.
Gary Humphries http://www.garyhumphries.com/ I salute you, even though you are a Liberal and therefore my sworn enemy.
The ACT Legislature is planning to have another attempt at passing a bill to allow same sex couples the right for legally binding civil unions (marriage in other words) and my new pal Senator Humphries has completely contradicted the Federal Government and Opposition’s stance, and stated he will vote against any move by the Federal Government to block the ACT’s legislation.
While I am (clearly!) no legal expert, I think his argument is simple and quite effective.
If it were a state, let’s say for example, Victoria, debating the introduction of this legislation then the Federal mob would fairly much keep their two bob’s worth out of the argument and let the legislative process run its course. In the case of the ACT though, both the Howard and Rudd government’s have jumped all over this legislative move on two previous occasions because it’s only a territory, not a state. It’s cheap pandering to the conservative vote and mucking about in local politics where they have no right to be in the first place.
Bollocks to that! Governments for decades have applauded themselves at breaking down the walls of discrimination, yet at the same time ignoring the fact they continue to discriminate against an entire sector of the community, couples, like any others, that just happen to be of the same gender.
As far as I am concerned, straight or gay, if you are nuts enough to want to get married then go for your life and no-one, especially the government, should stand in your way.
To the ACT Legislative Assembly, good luck and thank you for continuing to bring this issue to the table; and to Senator Humphries, my admiration for taking a stance that is long overdue and I’m sure is greeted with much joy from many that usually wouldn’t find much happiness in the views and opinions of your side of parliament.
